The Faculty of Cultural Science of Universitas Sebelas Maret held an international conference with the theme “Indonesia: Art and Urban Culture”. The conference was held for two days on October 11-12, 2016 in Sahid Jaya Hotel Solo. Featuring keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Inajati Adrisijanti from Universitas Gadjah Mada and several invited speakers from across the country like Canada and France, this conference talked about the portrait of Indonesian cities since the colonization era.
Present at the conference were the rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Ravik Karsidi, M.S. and vice mayor of Solo, DR. H. Achmad Purnomo, Apt. There were 92 papers to be presented within the conference in addition to the papers from the keynote and invited speakers. The discussion in the conference covered several aspects of a city such as city icons like statues, building structures and functions, street names, public figures, and literature works. It also conveyed the development process of the cities from time to time and the implications for the citizens.
The committee chief, Drs. Susanto, M.Hum, in his speech stated that this conference was held as an attempt to cope with problems happening in the developing cities.
“Citizens are growing to live a city life. We build facilities and keep developing, but at the same time, more problems arise, along with city records including art, artwork, and lifestyle of the society. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct studies about the city from many points of view”, explained him.
This conference was hoped to promote cooperativeness and respect of each other’s capability including in art and culture for the sake of the sustainability of the city. The rector of UNS wished that this conference could stand as an annual agenda. He also recommended that there was an association or movement of society caring for the city as a result of the conference.
